To say that Vetements has singlehandedly disrupted the fashion world may be an overstatement, but considering the simultaneous buzz, sartorial confusion and steadfast devotion that the label has created, it just might be true. Headed by founder Demna Gvasalia and an anonymous collective of fellow creatives, Vetements emerged on the scene in 2014 with a distilled normcore aesthetic: nondescript, bulky silhouettes and streetwear-inspired basics stripped completely of high-fashion pretentiousness. “It’s ugly, that’s why we like it,” Gvasalia has said of the signature off-kilter look. Vetements questions the nature of taste, challenging global consumerism and the fashion industry itself by collaborating with a wide variety of companies including DHL, Levi’s and Manolo Blahnik.
