Oscar de la Renta

As a couturier and designer of the most elegant ready-to-wear, the late, great Oscar de la Renta was no stranger to drama. He was the protégé of the masterful Cristóbal Balenciaga, and after design stints at other houses, the Dominican designer founded his eponymous label in 1965. Lavish coats, sparkling gowns and luxurious textures were de rigueur for the designer, but he never shied away from an over-the-top yet refined sensibility. He mixed the European with the Caribbean, embroidery with bouclé, fox fur prints with real fox fur accents. His extravagance extended past clothing to jewelry as well, from beaded tassel earrings and sparkling cocktail rings to crystal collar necklaces and Chinoiserie-inspired carved resin bangles. Today, Co-Creative Directors Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim continue his legacy.
