Alex Kukai Shinohara (American/Japanese b. 1974) grew up in Brooklyn with one foot in the world of
fine art and the other in the deep graffiti culture of the 80s and 90s. He was born the son of two important Japanese contemporary artists Ushio and Noriko Shinohara whose life and relationship is the subject of the current award-winning documentary "Cutie and the Boxer". Alex, as a tagger and street artist, was able to creatively express himself away from the influence of the high-art world of his parents. An incredibly talented artist, he developed his own unique and strong artistic voice. Although graduating from the notable Rhode Island School of Art and Design, where he was awarded the Mark Rothko Award, Alex never let go of the raw power of his street art. Alex has exhibited extensively throughout the New York and Japanese young contemporary art scene. He currently lives and works between Brooklyn and Tokyo.
