Estelle Arpels was a gemstone dealer’s daughter, and Alfred Van Cleef a stone-cutter’s son. What seemed like a perfect match blossomed into a marriage, and then, in 1906, the couple’s shared love of gemstones led them to found the Maison of Van Cleef & Arpels. The small luxury jeweler, located at 22 Place Vendôme, quickly became a world-renowned business.
