Brooklyn based artist Jeong Min Park uses traditional methods of Korean ink painting to express depth and dimension. Through the spontaneity of this medium, Park expresses a balance of control.
Beginning his process in abstraction, landscapes eventually emerge through Park's multiple layers of ink. Each wash fuses to the former, connecting the layers like past and present life experiences. Through this process, the artist communicates her visions of life and spirit.
Jeong Min Park begins her paintings without a determined end in mind. Starting with a color that suits her mood, she paints instinctively until washes of paint begin to build a scene and reference forms. In this moment she takes up her brushes, allowing the abstraction to be beautiful in its own right while engaging the viewer with obscure references to form. Her series Come Empty, Return Empty exemplifies this style. In the series, Park painted abstract calligraphic personal symbols on small sheets of paper. When exhibited together, the symbols cover walls and feel like half-finished memories recorded in a personal language. Park obtained a BFA and MFA from Suwon University in Suwon Korea. She then went on obtain a second MFA at Long Island University in New York. Her work has been exhibited in both South Korea and the United States and is held in numerous private collections.
